There are many factors that affect a location recording which can have a drastic effect on the final result. With careful planning and preparation you can be confident in the process of recording and make it a lasting memory of your hard work and rehearsing. Important factors to consider when recording

When recording a live performance the problem that arises most often is musical error. No matter how prepared the musicians are, there can be slip-ups in the performance which must be noticed at the time as they will be there forever on the recording. So long as every bar of the recording is captured correctly in different takes, then the editing process will hide these mistakes. Monitoring is provided on the day of the recording so that clients can check their performance and re-play the piece as many times as is deemed necessary. Our process of taking notes and use of markers on the recorded audio will allow us to seamlessly join the takes together back at the studio facility for a perfect finished result. We can even perform some edits on site to test whether the recording is suitable or needs to be re-performed. Sections of the song can be focussed on to avoid recording the complete piece many times over.

Choosing a great space

The second most common problem is the acoustic quality of the chosen location. When choosing your venue, consider the sound before anything else comes into play. If your voice sounds good in it, then it is highly likely that it will record well too. We recommend that you consult us before committing to a venue. When recording in a live space which has long reverb, all music is subject to the room's acoustics, which is an inherent part of the sound. Reflections from the surfaces reach the microphone at levels almost equal to the sound source itself. To combat this, close miking is a creative option to minimise undesirable acoustic artefacts. However, the best solution is to start with a great sounding room.

Working with professionals

Finally, the sound engineers and recording equipment can have a direct effect on the final result. We have invested money in high quality microphones and recording systems to ensure that the performance is captured to the best standard possible. Equally important to the quality of the microphone itself is it's positioning in the room. Unit Studios' location recording engineers have deep experience in microphone technique and take a careful approach when testing each channel for high fidelity sound capture.

Does your band have a special gig coming up that you would like us to record and mix for your? Unit Studios Location Recording can capture a live performance at gigs. We have the ability to split the signal from every microphone and DI box on stage, allowing great control over the mixdown of the show. Additional crowd ambient microphones will inject a level of realism to the recorded performance, increasing the excitement of the final result.
